Grindel slammed her hands on the desk in front of her. “It’s enough of a red flag for me to check out my officers. I refuse to look the other way if there's even an inkling of someone rotten in my station house. I’ll talk with the district attorney to see about the chain of custody as far as evidence in any murder trial that may come up, but I need to know who it belongs to here and how it could have gotten into Deblous’s hands.”

Everyone stayed quiet as the wheels turned.

“So, anyone come to mind?” Grindel settled back into her chair, her fingers messaging at her temples.

“You know I find it odd how few of the officers don’t wear the pin. They didn’t know Quint as well as we did. But most, if not all of them who come into our corner of the station house have worn it.” Baker popped her head into the captain’s office.

“This isn’t your case, Baker,” Knight reminded her with a growl.

“I overheard you and your consultant and thought to myself, ‘Baker, why don’t you give them some help? Let them know about your observations.’ Like any friendly desk neighbor would.”

“Except your desk is two rows away,” Mel muttered from behind Anastacia.

Anastacia snorted, giving Knight an apologetic look when he caught her.

“I’m guessing you have someone in mind?” Grindel’s voice cut through the bickering.

“Franz has never really been one for pins, has he?” Baker eyed the officer in question.

“He’s at our board again.” Anastacia frowned, seeing Franz in front of the evidence board by Knight’s desk. A shiver went down her back that had nothing to do with the room temperature. There was something off about the officer. Something a little wrong.

“Again?” Grindel leaned to the side to see the man for herself.

“He’s been at the board a few times," Anastacia replied. "Once when I was there on my own. He tried striking up a conversation about Sammy."

“Mostly when Knight and Geist are out of the room. I’ve had to pull him away from the case myself a few times.” Baker frowned. “He’s been more concerned over their case than his beat.”

“He was also the one to give us the information about the tie clip,” Anastacia remembered and looked at Knight.“He was the one who handed you the paper for it.”

“I want to see him. I’ll call his super and have a chat before we bring him in.” Grindel waved at them to leave and immediately picked up the phone. “Get me Cardswell, please.”

They all turned to leave the office.

“Miss Geist?” Anastacia was stopped by the captain’s voice.

“Yes ma’am?”

She turned to the captain, who still had the phone at her ear. Grindel put a hand over the receiver and looked directly into Anastacia’s eyes. “Thank you for bringing this to my attention. But no more car rides with known criminals on your own, okay?”

“I will turn down the ride respectfully next time, ma’am.”

“All right, smart ass. Out.” She smirked and finally got the other line to answer.
